September 18, 2005 Meeting Minutes

Ohio LinuxFest
Conference held in Columbus, OH for various Linux applications and uses. The conference is on October 1, 2005, which is a Saturday. Those interested should contact Angelyn ASAP. At present we have 5 confirmed with 7 people possibly going. We will leave IPFW at 4:15 AM on Saturday morning after meeting in the WU garage. We will rent one car and if we need an extra Trung will drive his car.

Pizza Sale Results
At the beginning of the semester we noticed we were hardly making any profit. The officers held a meeting and we discussed the issue. We decided to begin selling pop in addition to the pizza to increase profit. This has worked out well as we have now essentially doubled our profit, however the funds are still not signficant.

Open Source CD Sale
The officers decided to hold another open source CD sale that has been done in the past. We will sell 5 CD sets of Fedora Core 4. In addition, we will have a CD of various open source applications which has been compiled to run on Windows. Furthermore, we will sell individual bootable CDs for Knoppix and Ubuntu. The price for the bootable CDs will be $2 and the CD sets will be $5. The sale will be held on October 3 & 5 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM in the KT basement near the bookstore.

CS 160 Study Sessions
After some discussion with Dr. Kim, Dr. Petruska, and Tammy Toscos I have acquired the syllabi for the CS 160 sessions and came up with the idea for exam study sessions. A few of our members agreed to help with the study sessions. The first study session was held on September 16, which we had only one CS 161 student. Our next session will be on September 23.

IT Services for Businesses
The officers have discussed the idea of offering services to businesses. We feel it will help us learn the business environment and thus gain business experience. Additionally, we will be able to raise funds in order to help pay for conferences and other events. I will propose the idea to CS faculty and obtain their assistance in making contact with the companies.

Job Shadowing
Rick has suggested an idea to me about job shadowing. I discussed the idea with the officers and we all agreed that it would be a valuable experience. We would like to setup a means for our members to be able to job shadow a certain job type in a business. I will check with some CS faculty and other departments on campus to find the best way to approach this.

Fort Wayne-wide Seminar
I really would like the CIA to become more involved in the community. As such, I believe we should hold a formal seminar open to the Fort Wayne area. We discussed possible topics or how to accomplish this. During the meeting we came up with an idea of possibly offering an open room where people can bring in their computers. We would offer services such as installing memory, installing a NIC, etc to them. We could charge an entrance fee for them to get in, but a minimal one. I will check with Student Life on the regulations that may apply.

Chocolate Bar Sale
As another means for gathering money in order to pay for CES travel, we came up with the idea to sell chocolate bars. We will sell them door-to-door as I had spoken with another organization previously that did not have much luck selling them on campus only. I will order the chocolate bars and members can each have a box to sell.

CES Trip Update
We currently only have a fraction of the funds to pay for the trip. Ken has graciously offered to provide a donation so that we may purchase the tickets in time. However, we still will need more money. At this point I am asking that any individual that truly wants to go to the CES chip in $200 by the tail end of October. I believe this is the only way we will make sure we have the money in time to insure we obtain tickets for everyone.
